Description
This fabulous fetish frog necklace is carved by Tyler Quam.I was able to identify Tyler Quam in "The Fetish Carvers of Zuni" book by Marian Rodee and James Ostler.
Tyler is a son of Emerson and Rosalia Quam and, like his parents, works in the traditional style. He learned from his parents and started using their equipment in 1984. These frogs are carved on both sides so regardless of how it's worn it always shows the top side of the frogs. Materials used are turquoise, spiny oyster, pipestone, mother of pearl, tiger eye and jet. The frogs are separated by shell heishi and small turquoise nuggets. The cones and chain are sterling silver.
Fetishes are for protection or guidance.
Frogs to the Zuni, symbolize abundance and fertility
and are considered the bearers of rain. This amphibian is most often associated with water, prayers for rain & fertility. The word amphibian means double life, perhaps that's why he carved both sides of the frog.
Never out of style, Southwest jewelry is an investment in enjoyment to last a lifetime.
All Fetish measures approximately 3/4" x 5/8"
Heishi is 3 mm round
Total Weight = 28.8 grams
